About David:

Author of the book "Illegal People: How Globalization Creates Migration and Criminalizes Immigrants," Bacon recently wrote the piece "Another Immigration Policy Is Possible." In it, he criticizes the proposals made by Representative Luis Gutierrez and Senator Charles Schumer, and the support for them by President Obama in his recent speech on immigration reform. Bacon's article states: "Grassroots groups don't like the proposals for new guest worker programs. They have been fighting raids, firings and increased immigration enforcement for years, and are angry that the Washington proposals all make enforcement heavier. They want the border demilitarized. And they believe any rational immigration reform must change U.S. trade policies that displace people in other countries." http://www.truth-out.org/another-immigration-policy-is-possible60995

Bacon added today: "People working without papers will be fired and even imprisoned under their proposals and raids will increase. Vulnerability makes it harder for people to defend their rights, organize unions and raise wages. That keeps the price of immigrant labor low. This will not stop people from coming to the United States, but it will produce more immigration raids, firings and a much larger detention system.

"Grassroots immigrant rights groups want an alternative immigration bill that would end trade-related displacement. The proposals made in D.C. do nothing about the root causes of forced migration while criminalizing migrants. We need a human rights policy that ends corporate displacement while protecting the rights of migrants."

I always said that Utah was, geographically, one of the most beautiful places on the planet. I still feel that way, but the line was sort of a backhanded compliment suggesting the culture and prominent ideology had room for much improvement.

I must say that Salt Lake City has changed a LOT since I last lived here. There is still the amazing geography and my amazing family. But the people are changing too.

Sadly, there are still some people who use political positions to dominate others, and I hope to address that with some of my work here. I will be writing more on my blog and possibly doing a radio program here in the near future.

I am still seeking full time work, but I think things will work out!

After a decade in Seattle we are moving to Salt Lake. There are some personal reasons I won't go into here, but we essentially wish to be close to family and to the nature we group up surrounded by.

I do not know when and if we shall return to Seattle, but it has always had my love since I visited my Uncle Frank in 1976 on Queen Anne Hill. I was 5 and was stunned by the water and the layout of the city.

Liam was almost born in our place out on Alki. V was born in our place on Roosevelt and these kids will now get to have a close relationship with cousins, uncles, aunts, and grandparents.

Remember a time when a car show was a glimpse into the future?

Innovation was oozing from the best scientists and engineers. Working on making safer, faster, and more appealing vehicles with every generation. But somewhere along the way you got knee deep into the gadget and gizmo phase and you have yet to see beyond that. Cars ceased being prescient and they became only cool.

So for the sake of your future stop using failed business models and minor adjustments to fix your car lines. Stop using planned obsolescence for reliable income after the initial sale of the car. Stop making cars while blindly missing the leaps in technological breakthroughs that would make your cars seem as if they were out of the future again.

A few examples:

- The Rocky Mountain Institute has discovered a material as strong as the steel you currently use, but that weigh much less automatically providing great savings in fuel costs. http://www.rmi.org/
- Gizmag has regular reports on new engines, fuels, and methods of generating energy for your autos (imagine a solar charged hybrid or an SUV that gets 100 mpg). http://www.gizmag.com/
- Future Cars reports on broad scientific and fun inventions in the modern modes of transport.

There are countless others.

Go into your archives and look for those competitive ideas you squashed in fear of competition (Tucker) or failed to use due to some short sighted allegiance to the gas companies (ie "Who Killed the Electric Car'). Look at all the patents you bought for fear of competition and USE them in your designs.

Stop stomping on the Tuckers and Tesla's out there and start competing and bringing on the brightest thinkers. They are graduating constantly from colleges and high schools across the nation with ideas that would be groundbreaking and would provide security for your long term goals.

If you can't find room for innovation in your car lines, why should anyone root for you or show loyalty to a brand?

News From L.A. "Libertarian in the debate might stifle Obama and Mccain getting message out"

The CBS news channel for L.A. has reported on an very important ruling,

"U.S. District Judge David O. Carter refused to issue an order on behalf
of Barr and Wayne Root, his vice presidential running mate, that would
disrupt the Civil Forum on Leadership and Compassion scheduled to begin
Saturday at 5 p.m. at Saddleback Church.

"Plaintiffs will lose
out on a fair amount of exposure and the opportunity to express their
views in a popular forum," Carter conceded. "On the other hand, halting
this event would deny the other candidates the opportunity to be heard
and would deprive the public of an opportunity to see the candidates
and hear their views."

I agree that halting the event would not be a grand idea, but are we missing something here?

Yeah, Obama and Mccain are constantly on EVERY news channel almost every hour of every day. In fact, I would wager that there will not be a single nanosecond of time where the Obama/Mccain coverage is not on the television somewhere (forget internet saturation).

By the way, look at how the news is covering the election.

CNN had the audacity to call Obama's clean bill of health after his visit to his doctor "BREAKING NEWS!!!".

Mcain has fuzzy understandings of economics and foreign policy that rival Reagans "I do not recall" era. But Mccain keeps plowing through instead of pleading the 5th (or is it the 1st?).

There is only a lack of coverage of the third party ideas.

There is only a lack of coverage of minor party ideas.

There is a glut of coverage of everything from the trivial to the mundane in the Obama and Mccain parade.

I stand here to use my spot in the media (nice view from the outskirts here, huh?) to declare that if a candidate is on enough ballots to win the election they ought to be in the debate.

Should it be law? Fair access to media?

Not in my opinion.

This ignoring of ideas and candidates lets me know the nature of the news channels that avoid the dissenting voice.

'Once' There was this film, who. . . .

Thanks, Joan, for suggesting that I rent the movie 'Once'.

From the opening scene with guitar and heartfelt singing I was hooked.

This stunning tale is about a songwriter, (played by Glen Hansard, of the Frames) busker making tips on the Dublin Streets, when along comes an admiring pedestrian (Markéta Irglová) who also happens to play a sweet piano. They interact, sometimes heading right for each other and sometimes heading off to their futures which lay deeply entangled with their past.

It is not your typical relationship as they not only avoid hooking up but they succeed in making the best of the gifts they have. I found myself mirrored in a skeptical music board operator who went into the show not knowing what to expect then by the end of it all willing to offer any ounce of support that could be mustered.

The casting was simple, the music was delightful, and the plot unfolds like a comfortable book.

We broke down and, or rather from fear of breaking down, went and bought a new vehicle.

We needed something that would be safe and durable for the new baby and Liam and the miss's. So 10 year bumper to bumper and keyless entry (beep,beep) and a HUGE trunk for all kinds of junk sold us on this beauty.

Married couple seeks two plus bedroom for family.

We need a washer and dryer for the baby girls clothes and for the young boys swim trunks and the daily wear of the two adults who goto work and school in Seattle.

We will need a dishwasher though we can do without if the price is right.

We would appreciate a close proximity to our sons school on Aurora and his mothers college in the Northgate Community.

I will gladly bus to work to let the miss's the one using the parking spot. Unless you do not have one, then she gets the street spot. Unless you don't have one, then she gets to hoof it down the street, she likes to run anayway, but with the baby on her shoulder it might be tricky, but don't you worry about that.

Oh, I know everything is being turned into condos and you might have the desire to raise the price to catch all that extra money floating around. . . but please don't.

I mean really. Which do you need more? A renting family that will stay and care for the place they dwell in for the next three to four years, or another highly transient, in and out renter that finds out two moths in they can't afford to pay for your fifth BMW and they have to go back and live in Montana with mom and dad till they get over the failed Seattle journey.

I know that it might sound like an old idea, but the roots of a community are in the homes and the families that get to know each other over the years. This is almost impossible to do when you have to constantly look for a new home.

Now we are losing that to make an extra profit out of our land. Sorry, I mean YOUR land. Owning a home for the average working class is becoming more of a nightmare than a dream. And it's hard to keep sleeping through this crisis even though many of you seem to sleep pretty well with the cash I worked hard for last month lining your pool.

Optional, but nice to have:

fireplace
local shops
a grandma or two for wisdom
a handyman to help me when I need to replace the toilet
a bunch of kids nearby to play with my boy on some kind of team
a few new babies to goo goo gaa gee snarfle with my little girl
a few mature humans to share in intellectual conversation about the world we live in

I have gone way too far.

Please forgive my wishing for something that will never happen till the dollar collapses.

Curse you for making me wish for that.

Who thinks that it makes sense for every adult in the house to have to work full time in order to have a house?

I take it all back, anything bad I said or thought about you.

Veronica Ruth Lindsley was born today at 2:53 in the morning. She weighed 10 lbs and 2 oz and was delivered in the master bedroom of our flat. She is sweet and olive and is a glorious addition to the planet's list of amazing people.

It Takes America to Bomb a Village

Many years ago Hillary Clinton wrote a book called, 'It takes a Village' and it was from a quote from Africa where the line goes, 'It takes a village to raise a child'.

Sadly Hillary and most of the Democrats when voting in office have shown NONE of the backbone they display on the campaign trail. Cantwell from Washington voted for just about every plank of the Bush agenda, and so did many of the new Democrats that got in on the chant of 'Change direction in Iraq, NOW!!!'.

The Republicans lost it decades age when they went from the promise of small responsible government into the depths of the military industrial complex and the competitive struggle against the Democrats. Whether they ever had intention of smaller government in the late seventies and early eighties is debatable, but what is not up for debate is that the debt has gone through the roof over the past three decades and that is regardless of whether it is an (R) or (D) in charge of the whitey house/congress/house of reps.

The current supporters of the war in Iraq tend to be of the opinion that if we don't defeat the Islamic radicals in Iraq then we will be fighting them here.

This assumes that we would keep funding wars and keep bombing all over the place in the middle east as most politicians have allowed and approved. What they fail to realize is that people like Ron Paul and other anti-Iraq war candidates are suggesting that we bring our troops home from anyplace that is not a threat to America and return our attention to rebuilding the nation.

If we are going to go to war, we should have Congress declare war and we should go, finish the job and come home. Not set up fourteen permanent bases in Iraq. {this is almost a direct quote from Ron Paul BTW- The only (R) running for Pres in 08 that did not vote for giving Bush war powers}.

The idea that if we do not win in Iraq we will continue the battle here in America also assumes that we continue to avoid diplomacy, trade, and sincere open communications and relations with the world.

We are capable of convincing nations to work with us without resorting to violence, and other nations will continue respect us with each new wave of bombers that fly home from the war torn middle east, full of ammo instead of leaving spent shells over there.

The time for change in Iraq is now, the way to do that is to change America now.

This is why I support the small handful of candidates running for President that have the voting record against the War and the Bush agenda. NOT the candidates that are making the same rhetorical speeches on the campaign trail that got them into a position of money and power. A position that they are more interested in keeping than keeping the U.S. out of a black hole war.

It all happened so fast. I was in my study and I came across a banner from CNN stating that they were looking for submissions for the debates. So I, holding my parrot on my shoulder, and using a Kodak LS753 camera I whipped out a question I had always sought to ask a major political figure. I then thought for a moment about how could I make my video stand out. Then it came to me. Spin the background around whilst staying calm in the center. So I did it in one take. Little did I know I would be recognized in time magazine for my efforts.

Being number seven of the CNN/Time magazine ten weirdest does not make me fell bad at all. I am not sure if they are rated in order from bad to good or from weirder to weirdest, but nonetheless I found a nice, middle of the road weirdocity of which I can be quite comfortable.

One last note, the comment from the Time/CNN writer asks if my video is 'creative? Or just nauseating?' Might I add that the reason I asked such a question is that most Americans find the debates with only the two party candidates to be nauseating. But I digress.
